The Brown Institute and Tow Center are pleased to announce the Yahoo! Hack, a Hackathon that will involve students and faculty, as well as journalists and technologists to tease apart the Yahoo! News Feed dataset. Comprised of ~110B lines of user-news item interaction data from 20M users across February - May 2015, this collection includes demographic breakdowns (age, gender, and location) and user-device interaction data. The data spans several Yahoo! properties, including the Yahoo! Homepage, Yahoo! News, and Yahoo! Sports.

Over the span of two days, we will challenge (and support!) you to tease through the data to find and tell stories about consumption habits. What can user-interactions reveal about how we digest news? What are the peculiarities of stories/headlines that grab us (or don't)? And what insights can we glean from different demographics, as seen through the lens of Yahoo! users.

As a follow-up to the News Corp and voxgov hackathons, the Yahoo! Hack will help showcase the interplay between journalism and data science, and how new innovations can broaden our perspective of how we consume news.
